About 50 choreographers, who are joining this year's MassKara Festival street and arena dance competitions, underwent a two-day creative workshop at the Bacolod City Government Center recently.

The workshop was conducted by Raymund “Rama” Marcaida, a protégé of Ligaya Amilbangsa, the 2015 Ramon Magsaysay awardee for the preservation and promotion of Pang-alay - a dance common to Asian countries.
Marcaida had studied in Bali, Indonesia to learn their dances and culture.
The theme of this year's festival is "Bacolod: City of Southeast Asia," in celebration of Bacolod's participation to the Philippine hosting of the 50th year of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.

The 2017 MassKara music is a fusion of the traditional, modern, and ASEAN culture.
The participants will choreograph the 11 entries for the schools category and 15 entries for the barangays category in the street and arena dance competitions on Oct. 21 and 22, respectively.

During the workshop, Philippine jazz proponent Roberto "Bob" Aves talked about the official MassKara music that he composed, arranged, and produced, in collaboration with Gerry Grey.
Rudy Reveche, streetdance committee chair, said Marcaida oriented the participants on basic Asian dance choreography, from which they created their own.

Reveche said the choreographers will use this choreography in their streetdance competition entries.
